Guidelines and Suggestions for Preparing Poster Session Presentations

Powerful Learning, Powerful Partnerships Poster Sessions are scheduled for both days -- Thursday, November 11, 1999 from 3:00pm to 3:45pm and Friday, November 12, 1999 from 1:00pm to l:45pm. No other presentations will be scheduled during these time periods so that all conference participants can attend. We would like to have you be available with your poster for both days.

  1. The poster board surface is four feet high by six feet wide (bring paper or cloth to cover it if you want a specific color background).
  2. Bring thumbtacks or push pins to mount your poster(s) and illustrative materials.
  3. A table is also provided (sign-up sheets, handouts, and computer displays may be placed on the table).
  4. If possible you should remain at the display to answer questions and discuss your project with attendees.
  5. All materials to be posted should be prepared before you arrive. Plan on arriving 15-30 minutes before the assigned poster session time to mount your display. Displays should be dismantled after the session.
  6. Posters should be carefully planned to maximize clarity and simplicity in conveying information.
  7. Place a heading at the top that is at least three inches high.
  8. The body of the display should be self-explanatory and should include figures, tables, graphs, maps, or photographs displayed in a well organized and coherent sequence from top to bottom.
  9. All materials should be legible from a distance of a minimum of four feet (suggest using fonts that are at least 18 pt., and colors that are legible at a distance).
  10. Caption each illustration.
  11. Limit the amount of text that is included.
  12. Provide sign-up sheets for attendees who might wish more information, reprints, etc.
  13. Bring adequate copies (200) of any handouts with you.

Computer Displays

  1. If you have a computer display, you need to bring your own computer.
  2. Power will be provided, but there are no live Internet connections.
  3. Computer displays should complement the poster display. Because of space limitations and large crowds, it may be difficult for all interested people to view the computer displays, but they will be able to see your poster display.

Please contact Barbara Dewey at (319) 335-5871 or barbara-dewey@uiowa.edu if you have additional questions. We look forward to seeing you in November.
