Information Commons

The Information Commons, located in the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences serves as a common ground for self-directed learning, information research, hands-on class sessions and multimedia development. In the Commons (multimedia workstations and electronic classrooms) faculty and students can access health sciences databases and other electronic resources containing text, images, sounds, videos, and numerical data; authoring tools and software to create multimedia courseware, and computer-based learning products developed at the University of Iowa and other institutions, or available commercially. The Commons features hands-on electronic classrooms ideal for problem-based learning.

10:30 - 11:30 am

Information Arcade

In 1992 the University of Iowa Libraries opened the Information Arcade, a unique, groundbreaking facility designed to support the use of electronic resources in research, teaching, and independent learning, and founded on the philosophy of collaboration between librarians, faculty, and technologists. Over the past six years the Arcade was the focus of intense worldwide attention including winning the ALA Library of the Future Award. Five years after its opening new campus-wide technology based services are being developed to support learning, teaching, and creative research. Located in the Main Library the Arcade consists of multimedia workstation areas and an electronic classroom staffed by experts for a wide variety of networked information technology application.
