Beyond the PDF: Planning for the Future of the Dissertation

Thursday, 15 March 2018

A one-day mini-conference offered by the University of Iowa Graduate College & Libraries, and sponsored by ProQuest

As faculty and students ponder how the dissertation might be reimagined in response to emerging technologies and the career outcomes of contemporary doctoral students, ETD administrators and university librarians also consider where the future will lead; however, we often find ourselves asking very different questions.

While faculty and students question the prevailing convention of the narrative dissertation and dream up alternative dissertation forms such as the documentary film, a museum exhibit, a co-edited work, or a major conference, ETD Administrators and university librarians also see the future coming, but we find ourselves reflecting on corresponding considerations such as file type, copyright, image release, public access, and the examination of novel forms.

This day-long mini-conference will bring together the three stakeholder groups—ETD Administrators, Digital Preservation and Institutional Repository Librarians, and ProQuest—with responsibility for receiving and archiving thesis and dissertation deposits.  The goal is to explore how we can prepare for—and help shape—the future.  Join us for a day of cross-institutional conversation about issues related to the changing nature of the dissertation and how we can address them.
