{"id":1168,"date":"2022-07-21T15:17:26","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T15:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/?page_id=1168"},"modified":"2026-05-12T16:26:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T16:26:48","slug":"nsf","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/plans\/nsf\/","title":{"rendered":"NSF &#8211; Data Management and Sharing Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"#policy\">NSF Policy<\/a>\u00a0 |\u00a0 <a href=\"#form\">Create the Plan<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"policy\">NSF Data Management and Sharing Plan Policy<\/h2>\n<p>The Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) 24-1 describes NSF-wide policies, but<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dmsp\">Supplement 2 (Jan. 22, 2026)<\/a> takes precedence over the PAPPG.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Changes relevant to data sharing and the data management plan are outlined in the Supplement:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#public-access\">Public Access to Research Products<\/a> (Chapter XI.D.2.c)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dissemination-sharing\">Dissemination and Sharing of Research Results<\/a> (Chapter XI.D.4)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dmsp\">Data Management and Sharing Plan<\/a> (Chapter II.D.2.(i).(ii))<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>General guidelines:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Data should be shared according to existing standards whenever possible<\/li>\n<li>Primary data, samples, physical collections, software, inventions, curriculum material, and other supporting materials\u00a0should be shared as covered by the DMSP<\/li>\n<li>Datasets should be deposited in repositories that assign a Persistent Identifier (PID), such as a DOI.\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0if no PID has been assigned, an NSF-PAR ID will be accepted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Shared datasets must\u00a0acknowledge\u00a0NSF support and\u00a0award number(s) in their metadata<\/li>\n<li>Shared datasets should be reported in annual and final project reports in the Products section<\/li>\n<li>The dataset&#8217;s DOI must be reported via <a href=\"https:\/\/par.nsf.gov\">NSF-PAR<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Exceptions (delays and limiting access) must be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-1#dmsp\">justified in the DMSP<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/data-management-plan#directorate-andor-division-guidance-6d6\">Directorates and Divisions within NSF may have additional requirements and guidance<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that you are applying to may also include information about data management and sharing.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"form\">Using Research.gov to Create the Plan<\/h2>\n<p><strong>NSF requires researchers to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.gov\/research-web\/homepage?continue\">Research.gov<\/a> to create the Data Management and Sharing Plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can save versions of your plan in your account in Research.gov. Drafts of plans can be exported\u00a0if you would like us to review the plan.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.demo.research.gov\/proposalprep\/#\/proposal-prep\">demo site<\/a> if you would like to see what the form looks like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Notes about the form<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Data or Research Product Category General Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">For certain NSF funding opportunities, the form might provide you with a list of pre-defined Categories. But in other cases, you may have to create your own Category via &#8220;Add new.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">For pre-defined Categories, there may also be pre-defined options displayed in &#8220;Data Standards and Metadata&#8221; and &#8220;Public Archiving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">At this time, you can have up to 4 Categories.
