{"id":1168,"date":"2022-07-21T15:17:26","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T15:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/?page_id=1168"},"modified":"2026-03-23T13:15:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T13:15:13","slug":"nsf","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/plans\/nsf\/","title":{"rendered":"NSF &#8211; Data Management Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>NSF policy for data management and sharing plans<\/h3>\n<p>Policy in effect January 22, 2026, via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2\">Policy Notice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NSF data sharing policy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/data-management-plan#directorate-andor-division-guidance-6d6\">details vary by directorate<\/a>, but they all require public access to scientific data in a timely manner.<\/p>\n<p>The Research.gov tool referred to in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dmsp\">Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) section<\/a> of the Policy Notice will be released on April 27, 2026. Proposals submitted before that date should continue preparing the DSMP as a PDF upload.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Data should be public at time of publication. Exceptions (delays and limiting access)\u00a0must be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-1#dmsp\">justified in the DMSP<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Data should be shared according to existing standards whenever possible<\/li>\n<li>Primary data, samples, physical collections, software, inventions, curriculum material, and other supporting materials\u00a0should be shared as covered by the DMSP<\/li>\n<li>Datasets should be deposited in repositories that assign a Persistent Identifier (PID), such as a DOI.\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0if no PID has been assigned, an NSF-PAR ID will be accepted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Shared datasets must\u00a0acknowledge\u00a0NSF support and\u00a0award number(s) in their metadata<\/li>\n<li>Shared datasets should be reported in annual and final project reports in the Products section<\/li>\n<li>The dataset&#8217;s DOI must be reported via <a href=\"https:\/\/par.nsf.gov\">NSF-PAR<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-weight: bold; font-size: smaller;\">adapted from <a href=\"https:\/\/instr.iastate.libguides.com\/dmsp\/NSF-req\">ISU Libraries NSF DMSP Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Deeper Dive:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Policy Notice takes precedence over PAPPG 24-1, and can be found here:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2\">Implementation of Policy Changes to Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) 24-1, Supplement 2.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Policy changes in the following sections will impact data sharing and the data management plan:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#public-access\">Public Access to Research Products<\/a> (Chapter XI.D.2.c)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dissemination-sharing\">Dissemination and Sharing of Research Results<\/a> (Chapter XI.D.4)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/policies\/document\/pappg24-1-supplement-2#dmsp\">Data Management and Sharing Plan<\/a> (Chapter II.D.2.(i).(ii))<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NSF policy for data management and sharing plans Policy in effect January 22, 2026, via Policy Notice.
