Will there be maximum appropriate sharing?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Data sharing may be restricted for legal, technical, or ethical reasons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0 \u00a0If maximal sharing is not appropriate, compose a brief justification (with specific legal, technical, and\/or ethical reasons) which should go in Element 4<\/p>\n<h3>2. Will data sharing begin according to the required schedule?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>For articles published prior to grant close out, data underlying the article must be shared at the time of the article&#8217;s publication.<\/li>\n<li>For data related to findings reported in the final Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR), that data should be shared by the time of that final RPPR as part of closeout, if it has not already been shared at the time of an article&#8217;s publication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0\u00a0 If data will not be shared on the required schedule, compose a brief justification (with specific legal, technical, and\/or ethical reasons) which should go in Element 4<\/p>\n<h3>3. Will shared data stay available as long as the repository or journal maintains it?<\/h3>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0 \u00a0Consult the repository\u2019s documentation to determine the repository\u2019s anticipated preservation period. Iowa Research Online will preserve data for a minimum of 10 years after the grant performance period.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0 \u00a0If data will not remain available for the specified preservation period, compose a brief justification (with specific legal, technical, and\/or ethical reasons) which should go in Element 4<\/p>\n<h3>4. Justifications for \u201cno\u201d answers and\/or explanations for other limitations<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Describe what restrictions or modifications to data sharing will be applied, in 300 words or less.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0 \u00a0If Elements 1, 2, 3, 7a, or 7b were answered <em>no<\/em>, add an explanation here<\/p>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0 \u00a0For each reason limiting the extent or timeframe of sharing, determine whether the reason is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Legal;<\/li>\n<li>Technical; or<\/li>\n<li>Ethical<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0 \u00a0Describe any other anticipated limitations on sharing, e.g. if you plan to transform or clean the data beyond minimum processing before sharing.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Are you prepared for human subjects protections? If applicable<\/h3>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0\u00a0 If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-22-213.html\">human subjects data<\/a>, consider how you will protect the privacy, rights, and confidentiality of study participants (de-identification, use of a restricted access repository, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0\u00a0 If human subjects data protections will limit or prevent sharing, mark this Yes and describe the restrictions in Element 4. If human subjects protections prevent all sharing, indicate \u201cno\u201d in Element 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0\u00a0 Consider whether data can be shared with <a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/p68s2\">access controls<\/a> rather than openly available.<\/p>\n<h3>6. List the key types of scientific data to be generated during the project.<\/h4>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0 \u00a0A brief list of the anticipated types of data that will be created or used as part of the study, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organism\/source of the data, e.g. mouse, human<\/li>\n<li>Modality of data generation, e.g. fMRI; survey; biometrics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Column 2 (6.b) Identify one or more qualifying data repositories for each type of data (or group(s) of data that will be deposited into the same repository)<\/h4>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0\u00a0 Name <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/dms\/selecting-a-data-repository\">the repository(ies) where data will be archived<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The NIH expects data to be shared <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/dms\/selecting-a-data-repository\">via established repositories that have specific desired characteristics for preserving and sharing<\/a> data<\/li>\n<li>See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/NIHbmic\/domain_specific_repositories.html\">NIH domain repositories list<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/share\/data-repositories\/\">Selecting a Data Repository<\/a>, or <a href=\"mailto:lib-data@uiowa.edu\">contact us<\/a> for assistance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If no domain repository can be identified and data can be openly shared, we recommend using Iowa Research Online (IRO) over other generalist repositories.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Suggested text for IRO: &#8220;Iowa Research Online, the UI institutional repository, which meets the desired characteristics of data repositories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>7. Genomic Data and Sharing (GDS)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>If you are sequencing human DNA, including SNPs or methylation studies, consider whether you are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/gds\/overview\"><strong>subject to the genomic data sharing policy<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>7a. Will there be sharing of the genomic data, using the accelerated GDS timing and recommended GDS repositories?<\/h4>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0\u00a0 Consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/gds\/data-submission-and-release-expectations\">genomic data sharing submission and release schedule<\/a> for each level of data processing<\/p>\n<h4>7b. Will you be able to obtain <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/gds\/institutional-certifications\">institutional certification<\/a> for the genomic data?<\/h4>\n<p>\u2610\u00a0\u00a0 Consult your institution\u2019s human research protection office, the chair of the IRB, or the institution\u2019s research integrity officer (RIO) about your institution\u2019s process for issuing Institutional Certification<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"samples\">Sample Plans<\/h2>\n<p>Only a few sample plans have been shared so far, but more may become available.<\/p>\n<p>These plans may be specific to the Institute and type(s) of data to be collected and shared.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nigms.nih.gov\/Research\/Pages\/data-management-and-sharing-plan\">National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"budget\">Budgeting for Data Management &amp; Sharing<\/h2>\n<p>Investigators can <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/dms\/budgeting-for-data-management-sharing\">include costs for data sharing in the proposal budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NIH provides <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/dms\/budgeting-for-data-management-sharing#after\">guidance<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/faqs#\/data-management-and-sharing-policy.htm?anchor=11896\">Frequently Asked Questions about budgeting for data sharing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick overview by FASEB about budgeting for data management in NIH proposals:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Budgeting for Data Management in NIH Grants - FASEB DataWorks!\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RSSzn9SwNQA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Video by FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"policy\">NIH Policy<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/sharing-policies\/dms\/policy-overview\">policy released in 2023<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applies to all awards that generate scientific data, regardless of the funding amount or mechanism.<\/li>\n<li>Requires a data management and sharing plan for all proposals.<\/li>\n<li>Requires that data must be shared at the time of associated publications, or by the end of the grant performance period, whichever comes first.<\/li>\n<li>Strongly encourages researchers to use repositories for sharing data.<\/li>\n<li>Institutes, Centers, and Offices may have more specific requirements than the broader NIH policy, so review the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that you are applying to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"assistance\">Assistance<\/h2>\n<p>We&#8217;ve assisted many UI researchers with their data management and sharing plans.
