Include a reference to your data in the text of the paper with a data availability statement and add a data citation to your references section.<\/p>\n<p>This will ensure that the data citation becomes part of the scholarly record and provides pathways for others to find your work. Research funders also want you to share data and a citation is proof of your data being shared.<\/p>\n<p>If you are depositing data with the UI, we can reserve a DOI for your dataset, so you can include it in the article submission. We can also assist with sharing and publishing data.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More here<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Cite Others&#8217; Data<\/h3>\n<p>Give credit to other data sources when you use them, just as you do when using published literature. Whether for a paper or a presentation, it\u2019s important to cite the data files used.<\/p>\n<h4>Parts of a Data Citation<\/h4>\n<p>A data citation may include some or all of the following elements. These will depend on the established practices in your research field, characteristics of the data, and citation style you use.<\/p>\n<p>Required elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creator(s) of the dataset<\/li>\n<li>Title of the dataset<\/li>\n<li>Year of publication of the dataset<\/li>\n<li>Version, when appropriate<\/li>\n<li>Publisher: name of institution, repository, or data center<\/li>\n<li>Identifier (e.g. DOI or other persistent link)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Strongly encouraged:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Resource type, in brackets ([Dataset])<\/li>\n<li>Analysis software, if required<\/li>\n<li>Date accessed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"csl-bib-body\">\n<div class=\"csl-entry\">Li, X., &amp; Lehmler, H.-J. The Citation Formatters (above) will provide the information in a style that approximates style requirements, so you may want to confirm that those generated citations completely follow a particular citation style guide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>American Geophysical Union (AGU)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agu.org\/Publish-with-AGU\/Publish\/Author-Resources\/Data-and-Software-for-Authors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">author guidelines <i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"> <\/i><\/a>\u00a0for citing data sets<\/li>\n<li>Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.esipfed.org\/Interagency_Data_Stewardship\/Citations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interagency Data Stewardship\/Citations <i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"> <\/i><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Citing and linking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/geo\/info\/linking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gene Expression Omnibus (NCBI) database <i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"> <\/i><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/datacite.org\/cite-your-data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DataCite citation examples <i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"> <\/i><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Citation formatters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have a DOI, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/citation.crosscite.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CrossCite DOI data citation formatter<\/a>\u00a0to create citations corresponding to a variety of citation styles.<\/p>\n<p>Most data repositories will provide citations for their datasets. Some will also request that you cite the related publication(s) along with the data.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"das\">Data Availability Statements<\/h3>\n<p>An increasing number of journals require or encourage the inclusion of a data availability statement in articles, which describes how readers can access the data that underlies the article.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows some sample language you might use for a data availability statement.<\/p>\n<p>Check your journal and publisher for guidelines.
