{"id":511,"date":"2019-02-08T14:51:34","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T14:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/share\/preservation-of-data-and-access\/"},"modified":"2022-10-31T19:25:18","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T19:25:18","slug":"preservation-of-data-and-access","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/share\/preservation-of-data-and-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Preservation of Data &amp; Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Preserving access to research data can enable discoveries to build on past work long after a publication.<\/p>\n<p>The University policy is that &#8220;investigators are responsible for the orderly collection, retention, cataloguing, and proper storage of research data.&#8221; In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/plan\/\">many\u00a0funding organizations<\/a>\u00a0require that researchers consider and implement measures to insure access to their data.<\/p>\n<p>How is this accomplished?<\/p>\n<h2>Repositories and Data Centers<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/share\/data-repositories\/\">Depositing data in a repository<\/a> will usually provide preservation of the data (and documentation, or metadata) that you deposit. You should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/data\/share\/data-repositories\/\">confirm that the repository will do this for you<\/a>. The UI&#8217;s repository, Iowa Research Online, is available to do this if a domain repository is not available.<\/p>\n<h2>UI Resources for Preserving Data and Metadata<\/h2>\n<p>What if there is additional data that is not publicly shared or placed in a repository, but is essential to your research and\/or publications?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dsp.research.uiowa.edu\/file\/ui-research-data-policy-2017pdf\">UI Research Data Policy<\/a> is that research data\u00a0 must\u00a0 be\u00a0 retained by\u00a0 the\u00a0 investigator(s)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>for a minimum\u00a0 of\u00a0 six years if\u00a0 the\u00a0 study\u00a0 involved the collection of\u00a0 protected\u00a0 health\u00a0 information<\/li>\n<li>for\u00a0 all\u00a0 other research,\u00a0 data\u00a0 must\u00a0 be\u00a0 retained by\u00a0 the\u00a0 investigator\u00a0 for\u00a0 a\u00a0 minimum\u00a0 of\u00a0 five years after\u00a0 the final\u00a0 closeout\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 funded\u00a0 project\u00a0 or\u00a0 resulting\u00a0 publication,\u00a0 whichever occurs\u00a0 later<\/li>\n<li>some\u00a0 circumstances\u00a0 may\u00a0 require\u00a0 that\u00a0 research\u00a0 data are\u00a0 kept\u00a0 for\u00a0 a longer\u00a0 period of\u00a0 time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preserving access to research data can enable discoveries to build on past work long after a publication.
