The University of Iowa Libraries seeks a highly collaborative, creative, and strategic leader for the position of Associate University Librarian for Teaching, Learning, and Research.

 

The Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Teaching, Learning, and Research (TLR), a senior academic leader in the organization, provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction to advance and promote the Libraries’ role in teaching, learning, and research at the University of Iowa. They guide, oversee, and coordinate the functions and departments responsible for providing library services in support of teaching, learning, and research and lead efforts to support inclusive and accessible services in the Libraries. The AUL for Teaching, Learning, and Research reports to the Jack B. King University Librarian and is a key member of the University of Iowa Libraries senior leadership.

 

The AUL for TLR currently has primary responsibilities to provide leadership for the following departments and functions:

• Digital Scholarship and Publishing Studio
• Hardin Library for the Health Sciences
• Humanities and Social Sciences
• Lichtenberger Engineering Library
• Marvin A. Pomerantz Business Library
• Scholarly Impact
• Sciences Library
• Undergraduate Engagement, including Main Library service desk and Learning Commons

 

They are also responsible for developing and executing the Libraries’ Strategic Plan, overseeing program development and evaluation, and managing resources in support of the Libraries’ mission. The TLR portfolio consists of approximately 65 full-time employees.

Key Areas of Responsibilities and Specific Job Tasks

• Envisions and implements strategies that support the teaching, learning, and research mission of the University. In collaboration with the Libraries’ leadership team, fosters the adoption of innovative, user-focused approaches to research, instruction, clinical care, and outreach to students, faculty, and staff.
• Provides programmatic visioning, resource management, and coordination for public service functions. Aligns operations and workflows with the University’s strategic direction and secures support from key constituents and stakeholders.
• Collaborates in libraries-wide planning, policy development, resource allocation, and staff management.
• Fosters and sustains an inclusive and welcoming environment for staff, students, scholars, faculty, clinicians, and the general public through the development of equitable services.
• Develops a collaborative work environment, building partnerships with other departments and units throughout the Libraries and the University.
• Displays and exemplifies attributes of a model leader and encourages others to develop leadership skills.
• Participates in fundraising and other development programs as needed.
• Engages in advocacy activities and represents the Libraries with other library administrators, campus partners, Board of Regents, Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) institutions, and other member-based organizations, such as HathiTrust.
• Maintains and stays abreast of up-to-date job skills or professional standards. Stays informed about innovations, trends, and developments. Skilled in mentoring staff in their continuous learning and skill development.
• Actively participates in and demonstrates visibility in relevant professional associations; demonstrates advanced professional activity and engagement. Demonstrates a commitment to services by actively participating in and/or leading communities or teams within the Libraries, on campus, and/or in the profession.

Required Qualifications: 

• Master’s degree from an American Libraries Association (ALA) accredited program or other appropriate advanced degree.
• A minimum of seven years of relevant experience and the ability to demonstrate broad knowledge of an academic library’s role in instruction and research. Relevant experience may include experience with teaching and learning, academic liaison programs, digital humanities, open scholarship, open science, health sciences librarianship, and/or research services in an academic library environment or other relevant setting.
• At least four years of administrative/supervisory responsibilities.
• Evidence of progressively increasing leadership, supervisory, or managerial responsibility.
• Demonstrated understanding of higher education research, the health sciences landscape, open scholarship, and the library’s role as an essential component of the research infrastructure.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate a strong vision and the roles libraries can play in meeting the evolving needs of faculty, staff, students, clinicians, and scholars.
• Demonstrated experience supporting inclusion and accessibility in an academic environment, in a workplace setting, and/or in the community, and the ability to articulate and successfully communicate the University’s and the Libraries’ commitment to develop, support and sustain inclusive and accessible culture and services.
• Ability to establish and sustain effective working relationships and proven effective interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
• A record of significant professional activity and awareness of national and international issues and trends in higher education, public services, and research.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment.

 

Desirable Qualifications: 

• Prior academic research library work experience.
• Prior experience supervising staff and/or librarians responsible for instruction, research, outreach, and/or other public services.
• Successful record of initiating, developing, and sustaining new programs and services.
• Knowledge of emerging and best practices related to health sciences librarianship.
• Knowledge of emerging and best practices related to digital scholarship and the role of libraries in making faculty and research output more impactful to the public.
• Knowledge of emerging and best practices related to student success and information literacy across the curriculum.
