Sackner Archive Project Coordinator Librarian (PLB1/3A)
The department intends to hire this position as a 2.75 year Specified Term position with start date on 9/1/2022.
Position Description:
The University of Iowa Libraries seeks a detail-oriented librarian or archivist with an interest in the avant-garde to serve in the grant-funded position of Sackner Archive Project (SAP) Coordinator Librarian. The SAP Coordinator Librarian will work with the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry to establish it as a more integrated part of the University of Iowa Libraries Special Collections & Archives. Under the general direction of the Director of Special Collections & Archives and the supervision of the Processing Coordinator Archivist, the SAP Coordinator Librarian will lead implementation of the NEH grant-funded Sackner Archive Project, which focuses on rehousing, description, and cataloging of the Archive. They may also contribute to instruction, reference, and outreach activities pertaining to the Sackner Archive.
The SAP Coordinator Librarian will spend the first year in the position creating workflows, beginning material assessments, and hiring a Graduate Assistant to begin in August 2023. Work will then expand to include training and supervision of the Graduate Assistant, as well as oversight of and coordination with the Project Conservator and student workers.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Identifying and determining workflows for Sackner Archive materials
- Processing manuscript material within the Sackner Archive
- Updating finding aids within ArchivesSpace
- Working with the Iowa Archives of the Avant-Garde Campus Partnership to determine disposition of Sackner Archive materials
- Marking and labelling materials within the Archive to align with Libraries tracking systems.
- Hiring a Graduate Assistant to work on identifying, barcoding, marking, and rehousing materials, and performing other tasks as needed.
- Collaborate with colleagues working in collection development, archival and manuscript processing, rare books cataloging, preservation, digitization, and instruction.
- Support day-to-day operations pertaining to the Sackner Archive, such as reference or instruction.
- Contribute to department-level planning and the formulation of new policies and procedures.
- Actively supports the University of Iowa Libraries commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace.
- Keep abreast of developments in archival standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.
- Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching.
Required Qualifications:
- A graduate degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity in an academic environment, in a workplace setting, and/or in the community.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, and collaboration are essential.
Desired Qualifications:
- An additional advanced degree in a field related to the position, such as Art or Art History.
- Experience working in an archives or special collections, including the physical handling of materials.
- Coursework or training in special collections librarianship, archives, art history, studio art, and/or museum studies.
The University of Iowa Libraries system consists of the Main Library, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and a number of branch libraries. The Librarian classification starting salary range is $49,000 – $51,000. This position will be posted through at least May 20, 2022 and may be removed from posting and filled any time after the original posting period has ended.
