{"id":7243,"date":"2023-01-18T14:46:10","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T20:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/events\/business-building-blocks-2\/"},"modified":"2025-03-20T14:31:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T19:31:35","slug":"engineeringopen","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/eng\/events\/engineeringopen\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering Open: Mini Golf Design Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Join us on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025, as each College of Engineering department competes to design the best fairway for a mini golf design challenge!<\/p>\n<p>See the final designs on Thursday afternoon in the Student Commons of the Seamans Center.<\/p>\n<p>Teams are organized by department or organization with a deadline of Dec. 21, 2024, to register a team. Individuals can still be sign-up and put on a team until Feb. 1, 2025, by using the registration form on the bottom of this page.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Teams:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Up to 12 teams (fairways) in total.\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Six fairways for each of the six departments.\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Biomedical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Individual sign-ups will be paired with others in their department to work together on the build.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Six additional teams for clubs and groups that are university-recognized and affiliated with the College of Engineering.\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">If you are affiliated with a club or team and would like to build a fairway, please email <a href=\"mailto:lib-engineering@uiowa.edu\">lib-engineering@uiowa.edu<\/a> with your club name and team members. Space for teams is limited and on a first come, first served basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Build Requirements:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fairways must be 8 feet by 2 feet, with all structures attached to the fairway.<\/li>\n<li>Design elements may not extend more than one foot beyond the edge of the fairway on any side, with no elevation maximum.<\/li>\n<li>Electronics or computer elements are allowed for design and aesthetic purposes, with only one power line.<\/li>\n<li>The teams will design the hole location, objects, interactive elements, and elevations along the fairway.<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During play:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>The ball must always stay within the fairway.<\/li>\n<li>The hole should be par 3.<\/li>\n<li>There must be at least one human element of hitting the golf ball.<\/li>\n<li>Groups can use materials from last year\u2019s fairway but must have a different theme and can only reuse two design elements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"9\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Disassembly and Storage\n<ul>\n<li>Fairways must be easily transported to the Seamans Center Student Commons on the event day and stored for future use in August 2025.<\/li>\n<li>There is no elevation limit when fully set up, but fairways must disassemble to a maximum height of 12 inches for storage.<\/li>\n<li>The design should allow ALL elements to be removed so fairways can lay flat and be stacked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials Provided:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each team will be provided with (available for pick-up starting on Jan. 6 in the Machine Shop):<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wood base (8 feet by 2 feet)<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">8 foot 2&#215;2 board to be able to cut down<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Turf (black in color)<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For design elements and obstacles, access to scrap materials in both the Engineering Library and the Machine Shop on a first-come, first-serve basis<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"4\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Any extra materials will be on the teams to provide.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"4\">The Machine Shop (G450 SC) will be open for Build Days throughout February so you&#8217;ll be able to pick up your materials and get expert help as needed.\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"4\">Feb. 3\u2013Feb. 26\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"4\">M\/W\/F 11:30 a.m.\u20133:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"4\">Feb. 18\u2013Feb. 26\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"4\">T\/Th\/S noon\u20136 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>We will be providing putters and golf balls the day of the event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Judging:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Judging will be both on technical and artistic elements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The judging grid will be on a 1-5 scale using the elements listed below.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><em>Technical<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All design elements are within the set parameters of the fairway<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Well-constructed<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The course can be reasonably completed as a par 3<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Was the introduction within the time limit?<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During play, ball stayed within the fairway<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At least one human element of hitting the golf ball<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Creative use of everyday objects or elements<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Awards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First, second, and third place\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">People&#8217;s Choice Award<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students, faculty, and staff get to cast a vote for their favorite the day of the event.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thursday, Feb. 27 timeline:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">9 a.m.\u20131 p.m.: Student Commons is open for build teams to set-up fairways<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">1 p.m.: All fairways to be in the Student Commons for judging<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">1:30 p.m.: Judging starts<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">2:30 p.m.: Public voting ends<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">3 p.m.: Announce winners<\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\">3:30\u20134 p.m.: Clean-up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All fairways will be saved and be brought out as part of the OnIowa! welcome event on Friday, Aug. 22.<\/p>\n<p><a
