{"id":4209,"date":"2016-03-09T14:24:12","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T20:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/?page_id=4209"},"modified":"2026-01-29T08:59:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:59:29","slug":"off-campus-access","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/hardin\/off-campus-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Off Campus Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>How do I access databases from off-campus?<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"red\">You MUST start from a UI Libraries webpage to be validated through the proxy server.<\/span> It is best to start from either <a href=\"\/hardin\/\">Hardin Library&#8217;s home page<\/a>, this page, or the University of Iowa Libraries <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.lib.uiowa.edu\/az.php?a=all&amp;s=29810\">Alphabetical List of Databases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Iowa Libraries&#8217; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/login\">Proxy Server<\/a><\/strong> provides students and faculty of the University of Iowa with free global access to thousands of electronic resources for scholarly research. The system allows students and faculty working off-campus to electronically access periodical and index databases and full-text resources.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"red\">When accessing a restricted resource from off-campus, you will automatically be prompted to enter your <a href=\"\/hardin\/hawkid\">HawkID &amp; Password<\/a><\/span>, at which point you will have full access to that resource.<\/p>\n<h3>Using VPN to access library resources<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"style4\">Having trouble accessing subscriptions off-campus?\u00a0 If you are behind a firewall, you may need to use Cisco AnyConnect<\/span><br \/>\n1. Launch <a href=\"https:\/\/its.uiowa.edu\/services\/virtual-private-network-vpn\/downloading-and-configuring-cisco-anyconnect\">Cisco AnyConnect<\/a>.<br \/>\n2. Browse to Hardin Library&#039;s webpage and continue.<\/p>\n<p>Please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/login\">UI Libraries&#8217; Off-Campus Access page<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/hardin\/hawkid\">HawkID Authentication for Off-Campus Access<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"red\">Access to electronic journals from the VA Hospital may require additional steps due to security differences.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start by launching <a href=\"https:\/\/its.uiowa.edu\/services\/virtual-private-network-vpn\/downloading-and-configuring-cisco-anyconnect\">Cisco AnyConnect<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Select a web browser from the Virtual Desktop menu<\/li>\n<li>Start at <a href=\"\/hardin\">Hardin Library&#8217;s<\/a> home page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>LibKey Nomad<\/h3>\n<p>LibKey Nomad is a web browser extension that makes it easier to navigate directly to the full text PDF of an article from our databases. It works both on and off-campus. Download <a href=\"https:\/\/thirdiron.com\/downloadnomad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LibKey Nomad<\/a> for your preferred browser. This browser extension is available for all modern browsers. Once it is installed, you will be prompted to select an organization. Simply select University of Iowa from the drop down list. Once that is done, new buttons will appear in our databases for \u201cDownload PDF\u201d or \u201cView Complete Issue,\u201d which will navigate to that issue in <a href=\"http:\/\/browzine.com.proxy.lib.uiowa.edu\/libraries\/209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Browzine.<\/a> If the library does not have access to a particular article, an &#8220;Access Options&#8221; button will appear, which provides options to request the article.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.lib.uiowa.edu\/request\/ags\" target=\"_blank\">Article Galaxy Scholar<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Article Galaxy Scholar provides UI students, staff, and faculty the ability to request rapid delivery of articles from a small number of selected journals. This service is available 24\/7.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some previously cancelled journals will be available through this service<\/li>\n<li>Faculty can request journals be added in consultation with liaisons<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/iowa.sharepoint.com\/:x:\/s\/libraries\/collections\/IQAoaiiNHvtCR4cwQJ1OGuPiAQl38iYJWsSTD0OM5N6pt8E?wdOrigin=TEAMS-MAGLEV.p2p_ns.rwc&amp;wdExp=TEAMS-TREATMENT&amp;wdhostclicktime=1769466596574&amp;web=1\" target=\"_blank\">List of Journals included in Article Galaxy Scholar<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Requires installation of Libkey Nomad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Link Converter<\/h3>\n<p>If you are off-campus and are attempting to open a link to an article, it may be necessary to convert the link so that you are prompted to login with Hawk ID and password, which will grant you access to the resource through the library. To do so, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.lib.uiowa.edu\/c.php?g=132114&amp;p=864441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proxy Link Generator<\/a>, paste your link into the box in the upper-right hand corner of that page, and then click \u201cCreate Link.\u201d You should be able to copy and paste the new link into a browser window and navigate to the article, if the library has access to it. <\/p>\n<h3>PubMed Outside Tool<\/h3>\n<p>You can change your preferences in MyNCBI to allow PubMed to display links to access full-text articles through library subscriptions while off-campus. To set this up:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to MyNCBI in the upper right-hand corner of the PubMed interface.<\/li>\n<li>In the drop-down menu that appears when you click your profile name, select \u201cAccount Settings.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Click on the link titled \u201cNCBI Site Preferences\u201d at the bottom of the page.<\/li>\n<li>On the page that appears, click \u201cOutside Tool\u201d in the \u201cPubMed Preferences\u201d menu.<\/li>\n<li>Select University of Iowa from the alphabetical list that appears.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do I access databases from off-campus?
