{"id":421,"date":"2012-03-12T12:04:35","date_gmt":"2012-03-12T12:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forms.lib.uiowa.edu\/history\/heads\/a-pictorial-history-the-university-of-iowa-libraries-2\/"},"modified":"2021-03-31T20:17:53","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T01:17:53","slug":"fire","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/history\/past\/fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"historynav\">The Emerging University Library \u2013 1855-1951 <a href=\"\/history\/past\/northhall\">previous<\/a> | <a href=\"\/history\/past\/schaeffer\/\">next<\/a><\/div>\n<p>June 19, 1897<\/p>\n<div id=\"history_column_left\">\n<p>Lightning struck the second chimney at the southwest corner of the building in the early morning of June 19.\u00a0 Approximately 25,000 of the 33,600 volumes and 15,000 pamphlets were destroyed, along with the shelf list and catalog cards.\u00a0 Also destroyed were the Tallant and German libraries, and part of the Talbot collection<\/p>\n<p>In the 1899 <em>Hawkeye<\/em> yearbook, Ellen M.
