{"id":427,"date":"2012-03-12T12:04:38","date_gmt":"2012-03-12T12:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/forms.lib.uiowa.edu\/history\/heads\/a-pictorial-history-the-university-of-iowa-libraries-7\/"},"modified":"2021-03-31T20:17:53","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T01:17:53","slug":"planning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.lib.uiowa.edu\/history\/past\/planning\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans for the New Library Building 1941 &#8211; 1949"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"historynav\">The Emerging University Library \u2013 1855-1951 <a href=\"\/history\/past\/annex\">previous<\/a> | <a href=\"\/history\/present\/\">next<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"history_column_left\">\n<p>Ellsworth and the University&#8217;s architect designed this with the carpenter shop.\u00a0 The pieces of wood represented walls, book stacks, and tables, all cut to proportion.\u00a0 Ellsworth&#8217;s final plan called for:<\/p>\n<p>First floor &#8211; general college core curriculum; Administrative offices, extension, union catalog, University catalog, bibliography, and the catalog, order and binding departments.<br \/>\nSecond floor &#8211; English Literature and Fine Arts.<br \/>\nThird floor &#8211; History, Foreign Languages and Literature, and the Debate Center<br \/>\nFourth floor &#8211; social sciences<br \/>\nFifth floor &#8211; State Historical Society&#8217;s library, study carrels, and storage space<br \/>\nSixth floor &#8211; auditorium and large conference rooms<\/p>\n<p>First floor, April 1, 1946, of the building Ralph Ellsworth originaly wanted to build all at once.<\/p>\n<p>In March of 1941, the General Assembly finally considered a request from the University for $2,000,000 for a library, to be built on a four-unit basis, each unit to cost $500,000.\u00a0 After several weeks and a reduction to $300,000 for the first unit, the bill passed on April 11.\u00a0 On May 7, Governor George A.
