Creative Alternatives

Creative Alternatives examines artists in East and West Berlin experimenting with action art (including performance, installation, and art “actions” in public space) in the decades surrounding German unification in 1989/90. Exhibits profile artists and art groups from East and West Berlin who used interactive visual displays to launch social and political critiques, to experiment with the blurring of art and life, and forge alternative agendas under different political regimes. These exhibits provide evidence and illustration to the dissertation by Briana Smith, a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at the University of Iowa.
