The Association of Research Libraries Investment Index provides a comparative measure among the university library member institutions, taking into account overall budget, collections size, staff size and similar factors. In FY2008, Iowa was 38th overall, and 20th among the U.S. public institutions.
The University Libraries ranks 14th in expenditures for collections among U.S. public research libraries (ARL FY2008), and is the largest library in the state of Iowa. However, Iowa ranks 10th out of the 12 CIC institutions (Big 10 Universities and the University of Chicago) in total library expenditures and total volumes held (FY08).
