John Culshaw is responsible for leading the University of Iowa Libraries, the largest library system in Iowa, in providing services, collections, and spaces to the University community and beyond. Before coming to Iowa, Culshaw spent nearly 22 years at the University of Colorado Boulder, most recently serving as Senior Associate Dean of Libraries. He received a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, pursued graduate coursework in History at Marquette University, and holds an MS in Information Studies from Drexel University.
Culshaw is the co-author of Managing Information Technology: A Handbook for Systems Librarians and has published and presented widely on topics related to information technology in academic libraries, integration of library and campus technologies, and planning and developing library spaces for today’s generation of researchers and learners. In 2014, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). He was twice elected Chair of the international Innovative Users Group (1997 and 2009). Culshaw is also a 2012 alumnus of the Association of Research Libraries’ (ARL) Research Libraries Leadership Fellows (RLLF) Program.
