Les Dunlap was previously Associate Director at University of Illinois Library, Urbana; and before that held positions at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver; the Library of Congress; the University of Wisconsin Library, Madison; and the New York Public Library.

During his tenure, the Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries was organized, one of the oldest such organizations affiliated with a university library; the Main Library building was expanded; and a number of new collections were received as gifts.

Dunlap was a member of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, appointed by President Richard Nixon.  Dunlap received a B.A. from the University of Oregon  and his M.A., B.S., and Ph.D. from Columbia University.
