Use of Collections: The University of Iowa Libraries supports access to the materials, published and unpublished, in its collections. Nonetheless, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreements with donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing, or accessing non -- paper based materials. Please read our "Use of Manuscripts Statement."
Scope and Contents:This series consists of numerous scrapbooks, comprised of miscellaneous clipped materials. Materials include railroad advertisements, postcards, photographs and pictures of trains, newspaper and magazine clippings of stories involving railroading or trains, train-related cartoons, issues of railroad publications, examples of train orders, tickets and other railroad ephemera, and occasional pieces of correspondence to Vander Maas. There are also handwritten notes from Vander Maas scattered throughout the books.
The materials are currently boxed by year, although a scrapbook may contain material from multiple years.
Vander Maas evolved his own general indexing system for the materials he pasted into his scrapbooks. The subjects included: Articles, Ads, Pictures, Current Events, Miscellaneous, and Cartoons. Vander Maas attached a contents list to the back of each scrapbook, that included the clipping or item's title and/or subject under the relevant category.
None of this material is further described nor currently accessible online.
