
There are three methods to get InfoHawk Catalog citations into RefWorks. You can either 1) use the direct export feature from within InfoHawk [recommended], 2) perform your search in InfoHawk, save your citations then import those citations into RefWorks or 3) search InfoHawk directly from within RefWorks. These methods are described below.
1. Using the Direct Export feature from within InfoHawk [recommended]
From the InfoHawk Brief Records or Full View of Record screens you can click on the RefWorks button
to export one or more citations into RefWorks. Follow the instructions on the next screen and log on to RefWorks. Your records will be automatically imported into RefWorks.
2. Exporting Citation from the InfoHawk Catalog
Step 1
Saving your citations in InfoHawk
- Select desired citations by clicking the box to the left of each record or click the "Select All" button.
- Select Save/Mail
- Under "Document Format" select RefWorks Format
- Click Send; Click OK
- From your browser select File / Save As
- Save the file as .txt
- See Step 2 below

Or, Saving your citations in InfoHawk - Using My Basket
- Select desired citations by clicking the box to the left of each record or click the "Select All" button.
- Click on Add to Basket
- Click Go
- Click My Basket
- Select desired citations by clicking the box to the left of each record or click the "Select All" button.
- Select Save/Mail
- Under "Record Format" select RefWorks Format
- Click Go; Click OK
- From your browser select File / Save As
- Save the file as .txt
- See Step 2 below
Note: you can also email your citations from My Basket for later importing into RefWorks. Follow the instructions above except enter an email address on the Save / Mail My Baset page. Save your email message as a .txt file. |
Step 2
In RefWorks
- Go to References / Import
- From the Import Filter/Data Source dropdown select RIS Format
- From the Database dropdown select University of Iowa (RefWorks Format)
- From the Import References into dropdown specifiy a folder (optional)
- From the Import Data from the following Text File, browse to the file you saved above
- Click Import
- Click View Last Imported Filter

3. Searching the InfoHawk Catalog through RefWorks
- In RefWorks go to Search / Online Catalog or Database.
- Select University of Iowa Libraries Catalog/InfoHawk from the dropdown.
- Perform a search.
- From the results page select individual citations, the entire page or all in list.
- Select a folder from the Import to Folder... dropdown (optional).
- Click Import.
Note: the local call number is the last number listed in the RefWorks Call Number field. In the example below, the call numbers before the text in red can be discarded.
