Historical Note

Dr. Rachel Kilpatrick of the State University of Iowa German department lead a group of students in a study of language across Iowa in the late 1940's and early 1950's. The study was conducted using questionnaires and oral interviews. Called the Linguistic Atlas of the Upper Midwest, it was a part of a larger project entitled the Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada. The goal of the study was to enable linguists to trace speech pattern migration, study how dialects spread, and determine the extent of extinction of folk speech.

Scope and Content

The Linguistic Atlas of the Upper Midwest includes a small amount of administrative material detailing the process of gathering field records. The bulk of the collection is comprised of completed questionnaires bound in volumes, with listings of individuals included in the volume and basic statistical information about each. Questionnaires include information such as name, county of residence, length of time the individual lived in the county, amount of schooling, and whether the individual knew a foreign language, in addition to information about language usage for common items and situations.
