Biographical Note

Herbert W. Albrecht, a farmer in Fairbank, Buchanan County, Iowa, was a member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO) and collected many related documents. The NFO was founded in Corning, Iowa, in 1955. It grew out of drought and low livestock prices. Non-partisan and nonpolitical, the National Farmers Organization's membership (unlike many other farm groups such as the Farm Bureau) is only open to farmers. It is organized along county, congressional district, state, and national levels, with its strongest influence in the Midwest (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Illinois). The NFO works to promote target prices, collective bargaining, and price contracts.

Scope and Contents

The Herbert W. Albrecht collection of National Farmers Organization materials documents the group's activities in central Iowa from the 1950s to the early 1970s. This small collection of 145 items includes official forms and contracts, by-laws and annual reports, as well as press releases, reports, and pamphlets. One entire packet relates to the collective bargaining issue. Most of the collection is made up of the organization's own publications. There are single issues and incomplete runs of The NFO Reporter, Newsletter, and News Flash. Mr. Albrecht gave these papers to the University of Iowa Libraries in 1972 and they are open for research by students and scholars.
