Biographical Note

Martin M. (Mike) Horvat is a printer and collector in Stayton, Oregon. For many years, his collecting focused on general circulation science fiction magazines and fanzines. Horvat founded the American Private Press Association and, during the 1970s and 1980s, published South of the Moon, a catalog of publications of amateur press associations. As a result, the Horvat Collection houses a vast archive of apazines -- such as NAPA, the long-running zine of the National Fantasy Fan Federation. The correspondence of fan editor Gertrude Carr and of amateur printers Burton Jay Smith and Willametta Turnepseed are also part of the collection.

Scope and Contents

The full collection is estimated to contain well over 250,000 items, and only a portion of it has been organized -- or, indeed, at this point in time, even removed from packing boxes. Horvat had, however, organized about 75 feet of zines into folders stored in vertical file cases. On the collection's arrival in Iowa, we moved those folders to standard size archival boxes and transcribed the folder labels to compile a first list with about 4,000 entries, the majority representing "genzines" but including some apazines, prozines, and other print materials. Since that time, all boxes have been reviewed, genzine and fanzines removed, and apazines set aside for later processing. Thegen zines and fanzines have been integrated with the initial sequence and duplicates have been removed from the sequence. Place of publication and and descriptions of folder contents will be added as time permits.

In physical terms, the number of individual items represented here is on the order of 15,000-20000 pieces.  The apazines rarely run more than 6-8 pages and are more numerous -- they may number 100,000-150,000 pieces.  As yet , however, we have no means to estimate possible internal duplication.

Bibliographies, lists, booksellers catalogs, and similar materials have been separated and are on described on the linked page.
