Biographical Note

Charles Edgar Pickett was born near Bonaparte, Iowa, on January 14, 1866. In 1888, he graduated from the State University of Iowa. Two years later he received his degree from its law school. He began his law practice in Waterloo, Iowa, with the firm of Mullan & Pickett. He became the vice-president of Waterloo's Pioneer National Bank and was a member of Iowa's Board of Regents from 1896 to 1909. Pickett was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican in 1909. He served in both the 61st and 62nd Congresses. After an unsuccessful bid for a third term, Pickett returned to his law practice in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1926, he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator. Charles Edgar Pickett died on July 20, 1930, at the age of sixty-four.

March 4, 1909 -- March 3, 1913 -- served as Republican member, U.S. House of Representatives, 61st and 62nd Congresses

1912 -- unsuccessful candidate for re-election to Congress

1913 -- resumed law practice, Waterloo, Iowa

1916 -- chairman of the Republican State Convention (Iowa)

1920 -- delegate-at-large to Republican National Convention, Chicago

1926 -- unsuccessful candidate for Republican nomination for U.S. Senator

July 20, 1930 -- died, Waterloo, Iowa; interred in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo

Scope and Contents

The papers of Charles E. Pickett date from 1903 to 1922 and consist of two linear feet of records arranged by item number. Each individual item in the collection has been numbered and indexed by subject and personal name. The papers primarily relate to Pickett's congressional career and political campaigns. Some of the subjects included are conservation, pensions, postal service, Progressive Republicans, Republican party, and tariffs. Correspondence is scattered throughout the collection, with letters from Albert B. Cummings and J. P. Dolliver.
