Scope and Contents
The OTW Collection consists of fanzines and pieces of fan fiction written and/or collected by various fans and acquired for Special Collections via the Organization for Transformative Works. Most of the materials in the collection consist of publications related to different genre media properties, although there are a few pieces of original fiction as well.
Much of the fan fiction is of the "slash" variety."Slash" refers to fan fiction that is sexually explicit, and same-sex in nature. In slash sex and sexuality are often the centers of the story, rather than the more conventional adventures featured in more traditional fan fiction. A few of the materials are what is called "real person" fan fiction, that is, fiction in which the characters are celebrities or other real people.
This collection is expected to continue growing for some time as OTW continues to faciliate the transfer of fannish materials to Special Collections.
Historical Note
The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) is a nonprofit organization established, in its own words "by fans to serve the interests of fans by providing access to and preserving the history of fanworks and fan culture in its myriad forms." OTW's mission is to ensure that fannish materials are recognized as both legal as and as creatively transformative. Again, in its own words, "we are proactive and innovative in protecting and defending our work from commercial exploitation and legal challenge. We preserve our fannish economy, values, and creative expression by protecting and nurturing our fellow fans, our work, our commentary, our history, and our identity while providing the broadest possible access to fannish activity for all fans."
OTW is involved with a number of ongoing projects, including an open-source electronic archive of fannish works that are born digital or preserved digitally; an effort to provide legal defense for fans working to protect their intellectual property rights; the maintenance of a fandom wiki; and the production of an online peer-reviewed journal devoted to scholarship on fannish works and practices.
