Government Information collections are in two primary locations.

  • Publications classified using the Library of Congress classification (LC) scheme are on the 2nd floor, northeast side.
  • Publications classified using the Superintendent of Documents classification (SuDocs), Swank, and UN classifications are on the 5th floor, northwest corner.

The Main Library Reference Collection as well as other libraries on campus may also include government information in their collections. Non-print government resources may be requested at the Service Desk, Main Library.

The University of Iowa Libraries is a depository for U.S. federal, State of Iowa, United Nations, and European Union information. Through depository programs, publications are received from these agencies with the understanding that they will be available for the free use by the public and made accessible in a timely manner. The government information collection also includes other official government resources and supporting indexes and reference material that enhance research activities. The collection includes subject-specific databases, official reports, statistical resources, legislative information, periodicals, policy analysis, and general information guides in paper, microform, electronic, and digital formats. Recent titles can be located through InfoHawk+, the Libraries’ online catalog.

Librarians with subject specialization are available for reference questions, in-depth research consultation, and classroom instruction.
