Avoiding (or fixing) Problems with Spreadsheet Data

Nearly everyone works with data in spreadsheets or tables. This workshop will provide useful tips for organizing your data in spreadsheets. Then we'll spend time using free tools like OpenRefine that can save you a lot of time when reviewing and cleaning up tabular data. This workshop can be tailored for specific groups and disciplines. Follow-up sessions and individual consultations are also available.

Data Management Essentials

Whatever the research you are doing, chances are, you’re working with research data. Small changes to your data management practices can make a big difference during research, and when you are ready to share the results. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to securely store and organize your data, keep track of changes to your files, create accompanying documentation, and submit your data for publication. Employing these practices will ensure that everyone, including you, can use and reuse your data in the weeks, months, and years to come.

Data Management and Sharing Plans for Grant Proposals

NIH, NSF, and many other research funders require data management plans as part of the funding proposal. A good plan may help you provide a more competitive proposal. We’ll cover the foundational elements of these plans, campus resources and policies you can include in the plan, and look at some examples. Bring your plan if you have started working on one.

Data Sharing and Publication

You’ve received funding for a project, and your research funder expects you to share the data. Or perhaps you are working on an article, and the journal requires you to share your data. In this workshop, we’ll walk through the process of preparing data for sharing or publication, important decisions to make, and ways to enable your data to have a broader impact.

NIH Data Management and Sharing Plans

NIH will begin requiring a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) all NIH funding proposals starting January 23, 2023. This session will help you create a useful and well-written plan that meets the requirements and can be put into practice in your project. We’ll dig into each section of a plan, including: describing the types of data for your proposed project; standards for data and metadata; selecting a repository; addressing preservation and access requirements; and considerations for access, reuse and redistribution. Examples and UI and NIH resources will be discussed. Bring your draft plan if you have one.

Beyond the Textbook: Finding OER in your discipline (for instructors)

The rising costs of textbooks have caused many instructors to reconsider the resources they use to teach their courses. This workshop will introduce you to Open Educational Resources (OER), free and openly licensed teaching resources that you can use instead of commercial textbooks. OER can be edited, combined with other resources, and tailored to meet the needs of your particular courses. Learn where to find these materials, how to use them in your course, and how to develop your own OER.

Choosing Journals for Submission

Knowing where to publish your research can be difficult, especially at the beginning of your career. The situation is complicated by recent changes to publishing models, predatory journals that can exploit you and your work, and the proliferation of journal titles over recent years. This workshop can help new scholars navigate the process of choosing journals for submission. Participants will learn how to evaluate journals in their fields, gauge a journal’s reputation, and prioritize journals to submit their work.

Publishing Open Access (without the processing charges)

Open Access publishing is a model that has gained a lot of traction in recent years. It allows everyone to read and build on your work, not just other university-affiliated researchers. This is great news for readers and authors, but paying for article processing charges (APCs) is not such great news. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make their work open without paying for it, by selecting high-quality Gold OA journals without APCS and by self-archiving their work in a repository.

Boosting Your Scholarly Impact

The world needs your research! Don't let it get lost in the deluge of new books and articles published everyday. In this overview workshop, you'll learn how to use researcher profiles and social media to promote yourself as a researcher and how to publish your work to reach the widest possible audience. Impact metrics like h-index and Impact Factor will also be discussed, but see our workshop on Measuring Impact for a more thorough treatment of the topic.

Measuring Impact: H-Index, Impact Factor, and other Metrics

Metrics like Impact Factor and h-index are often used to measure the impact that journals, authors, and articles have had on a particular field. But how are these numbers calculated and what do they really mean? In this workshop, you'll learn how to use tools like Journal Citation Reports, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar to find these metrics. We'll also discuss the importance of thinking critically about what they mean and how they're used.

Researcher Profiles

In our networked world, managing your online presence is a given. But scholars also need to manage their researcher profiles carefully. This workshop will introduce attendees to the most effective researcher profile tools such as ORCID and Google Scholar. It will also explain how use your profile to make your research as open and discoverable as possible.
