2021 Spring Learn & Create Virtual Workshops

All virtual workshops are on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm over Zoom! Registration is required as the Zoom link and password will be sent out 1 hour before the workshop begins.

Any of the hand-on workshops will have kits available for purchase through the Electronic Shop so that you can do these projects right along with the instructor.  Links for the kits will be in the description for class.  All kits must be purchased a week before the course to ensure you have it in time to pick it up.

February 10 – Build Your Own : Light-up/Pop-up Valentine’s Day Cards

  • Impress friends and family with a fun and unique valentine cards! Learn about paper folding to create a pop-up cards with lights. Taught by Dottie Anderson and Hannah Short, Artineers

February 24 – Soldering Basics

  • Soldering is one of the most fundamental skills needed to dabble in the world of electronics. The two go together like peas and carrots. And, although it is possible to learn about, and build, electronics without needing to pick up a soldering iron, you’ll soon discover that a whole new world is opened with this one simple skill. This virtual workshop will focus on doing through hole soldering. Taught by Jeremy Roszell, Engineering Electronics Shop.
  • If you want to be able to build along in the workshop, 2 variations of kits are available from the Electronics Shop and can be purchased when registering for the workshop. Both kits will include all consumable materials with the difference being if it includes a soldering iron. The “materials only kit” is $11.45 and the “materials with soldering iron kit” is $67.35. Cost will be applied to your University Bill and made available for pick up in the Engineering Library.

March 10 – Build Your Own : 3D Printed Personalized Keychain

  • Want to learn how to use a 3D printer, but not sure how to get started?  Learn the basics of 3D Design and Modeling in this step-by-step virtual workshop to create a personalized 3D Keychain. Participants will customize one of the premade designs and learn how to send the design to the Electronic Shop to be printed! After this workshop, all the custom keychains will be printed and made available for pick-up in the Engineering Library. Taught by Andrew Delgado, 3D Print Club.
  • Before Workshop please set up a Personal Tinkercad Account. Upon completion and log-in there will be a “Create New Design Button.”

March 24 – Create Your Own: 2D  PONG Arcade Game (CANCELLED)

  • Want to learn to create an arcade game? Join us for a fun filled session on how to develop your own version of the game PONG in Unity. All the links and information you’ll need for you to follow along to and code during the virtual workshop will be provided before the class starts.  Taught by Antonio Washington,  IEEE Student Group.
  • Be sure to sign up and download Unity ahead of time
    • Go to Unity Hub and install Unity
    • Choose version 2019.4.13f1 (LTS). LTS stands for long-term support
    • Choose the WebGL Build for non-device specific building capabilities (others work too)
    • Import project using Unity Hub (Add > path/to/TutorialPongFolder)
    • Open project using Unity Hub to make sure it is working (we can do this at the start of the tutorial as well).

April 7– Build Your Own : Shake Flashlight

  • How can electricity be generated without batteries? With magnets of course! In this virtual workshop, Isaac Johnson, of the IEEE Student Group, will demonstrate how a magnet and some electrical components can make a simple shake flashlight that never needs batteries! This type of flashlight is great for hiking, camping, or emergency situations. Taking away the need for batteries means this flashlight is always ready to go and can last a long time!

April 28 – Build Your Own : Hawkeye Desk Light/Night Light

  • Want to make a Hawkeye table night light using only 5 items? Using sticker LEDs, copper tape, a watch battery, card stock paper, and an acrylic frame learn how in this step-by-step virtual workshop. Taught by Kari Kozak, Lichtenberger Engineering Library, John Kostman, and Jeremy Roszell, both from Engineering Electronics Shop.
