Water Filtration Challenge: Official Rules

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY

    1. CHALLENGE:The Water Filtration Challenge: (the “Challenge”) is conducted and administered by a review board consisting of members associated with the Lichtenberger Engineering Library, Engineering Electronics Shop, Iowa Center for Research by Undergraduates, and the Office of Sustainability at the University of Iowa (“Board”). The Challenge is open to University of Iowa undergraduate students in accordance with the eligibility criteria as set out in these Official Rules.
    2. ELIGIBILITY:To be eligible for the Challenge (an “Eligible Entrant”) you must be:
      1. Eighteen (18) years of age or older;
      2. A current University of Iowa undergraduate student must be in good standing with University of Iowa. A “student in good standing” at University of Iowa is as set out in the University of Iowa calendar to mean a student who has first class standing, satisfactory standing or marginal standing, provided if a student has marginal standing such student cannot be on probation or the subject of an academic warning; All decisions regarding eligibility to enter this Challenge and the Entry Submissions will be determined by Board its sole discretion. This Challenge is void where prohibited by law.
    3. TEAM SUBMISSIONS: Subject to the following limitations, an Eligible Entrant may only be on one team. Teams can comprise of up to 5 individual eligible entrants from any degree program at the University of Iowa.  The team members are not required to be from the same department or college.   Each Team Submission must be submitted to the Board as provided for in these Official Rules.  Team Submissions not meeting these specifications will be disqualified.
    4. NUMBER, APPROXIMATE VALUE OF PRIZES AND CHANCES OF WINNING:There are fifteen (15) prizes available to be won in this Challenge (the “Prizes”), being five (5) 1st place Prize, five (5) 2nd place Prize, and five (5) 3rd place Prize, The Prizes are described in paragraph 11 below. The chances of winning a Prize will depend on the number of Eligible Entrants received in accordance with these Official Rules during the Entry Period as defined herein.
    5. CHALLENGE SCHEDULE:This Challenge commences on Monday, March 2, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. (Central Time) and closes on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. (Central Time) (the “Challenge Period”). Team Submissions must be received by the Board a week before the challenge starts, which is Monday, February 24, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. (Central Time) to be eligible to participate.
    6. HOW TO ENTER:No purchase is necessary to enter this Challenge. To enter, the following rules apply:
      1. An Eligible Entrant must complete the team form found at https://www.lib.uiowa.edu/eng/water-filtration-challenge/. Each Team Submission is to include names, emails, and affiliation of each eligible entrant.
      2. An Eligible Entrant must submit the Team Submission to the Board before the Challenge Closing Time and in accordance with the instructions on the website and the provisions detailed in these Official Rules.

    The Board reserves the right, but not the obligation, to not award a Prize. All these determinations will be in the sole discretion of the Board, are final and binding and cannot be challenged.

    1. CHALLENGE DETAILS:The Teams will be adjudicated by a multidisciplinary jury to determine the winners on Saturday, March 7, 2020. The Teams will be given an overview of the challenge and starting materials on Monday, March 2, 2020 at 12:00 p.m.  The Teams will have two (2) opportunities during the evenings (6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) between March 3, 2020 and March 6, 2020 to test their design (the “Field Test”).  The Teams will be supplied with all materials needed.  The Field Tests will include the same simulated wastewater and measuring equipment used during the final testing.  Teams will be judged based on the following categories within a matrix:
      1. Clarity of Presentation;
      2. Water Quality after Filtration;
      3. Turbidity = 1 pt/10 N
      4. Salinity = 1 pt/0.10
      5. Absorbance = 1 pt/10 nm
      6. pH = 1 pt/ 0.10 away from 7 (neutral)

    Following the initial screening, each judge will choose a short-list of top entries to be discussed at the adjudication meeting. Winners will be determined by consensus of the jury.

    The Eligible Entrants whose Water Filter is selected and has complied with these Official Rules, including without limitation the provisions of paragraph 9; will be declared a Winner. If necessary, should a Prize or Prizes be unclaimed, or should the Winners be unwilling, unable or ineligible to win a Prize as set out in these Official Rules, the Prize or Prizes will be forfeited and the Board shall have the right, but not the obligation, to select, as replacements only, additional prize winner(s). All participants (including without limitation Eligible Entrants and any Winner) must comply with these Official Rules. The determination of the Winner by the Board is final and binding. No communication with Eligible Entrants will be entered except with the Winners. All matters related to the selection and the verification of the eligibility of the Eligible Entrants and Winner will be conducted by the Board, or by persons designated by the Board in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the Board in this regard are final and binding and cannot be challenged.

    1. WATER FILTER: The Water Filter must use only materials provided. Teams will be provided with a list of all materials available and the maximum amount of each material that can be use in the filter. Extra material for additional filters will be provided during the Field Tests. Team Water Filters not meeting these specifications will be disqualified at the discretion of the Board.
    2. NOTIFICATION:The Board will notify the Winners, in person, on Saturday, March 7, 2020, to obtain personal details from the Winners about the Prize to be awarded.
    3. DECLARATION OF WINNER:An Eligible Entrant(s) will not be declared a Winner in accordance with these Official Rules unless and until:
      1. The Board has determined that the winners are Eligible Entrants pursuant to these Official Rules; and
      2. The Eligible Entrant executes any further release or documentation as may be required by the Board as provided for in these Official Rules.

    Once these requirements have taken place, the Eligible Entrants will be declared the winners (a “Winner”; collectively the “Winners”).

    1. PRIZES:There will be fifteen (15) Prizes consisting of Steel Double Insulated Water Bottle with Filter (approx. $35 value).

    A Prize is not transferable and must be accepted as awarded with no substitutions, except at the the Board’s sole discretion. The Board reserves the right to substitute a Prize of equivalent monetary value if the Board is unable to award the Prize as described. The Board will not be responsible, however, if factors beyond the the Board’s reasonable control prevents the Prizes from being fulfilled. In any such event, a winner will not be provided with a substitute prize or cash equivalent. All Prizes will be distributed through the Board after the final judging on Saturday, March 7, 2020 using the personal details provided at the time of notification.

    1. CHALLENGE MODIFICATION OR CANCELLATION:The Board reserves the right, without prior notice and at any time, to delay, or terminate the Challenge, in whole or in part, or modify, suspend, amend or extend the Challenge in any way, in its sole discretion including without limitation if the Board determines that the Challenge is not practicable or is impaired or corrupted or that fraud or technical problems, failures or malfunctions (including without limitation, computer viruses, glitches or printing or production errors) have destroyed or severely undermined the proper conduct, integrity, and/or feasibility of the Challenge. In the event the Board is prevented from continuing with the Challenge as contemplated herein by any event beyond its control, including but not limited to fire, flood, natural or man-made epidemic or health or other means, earthquake, explosion, labor dispute or strike, act of God or public enemy, riot or civil disturbance, terrorist threat or activity, war or any federal, provincial or local government law, order, or regulation, public health crisis, the order of any court or jurisdiction, or by any other cause not reasonably within the Board’s control (each a “Force Majeure” event), then subject to any governmental approval which may be required, the Board shall have the right to modify, suspend, extend or terminate the Challenge.
    2. PARTICIPATION:Participation in this Challenge constitutes an agreement by each participant to comply with these Official Rules.
    3. DISQUALIFICATION:It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure that he/she has complied in full with all of the conditions and requirements contained in these Official Rules. If any Eligible Entrant or Water Filter is found to be ineligible, or if an Eligible Entrant has not complied with these Official Rules or declines the Prize for any reason prior to award, such Eligible Entrant or Entry Submission will be disqualified and, in the Board’s sole discretion, an alternate Winner may be selected. No mechanically reproduced, illegible, incomplete, forged, software generated or other automated multiple entries will be accepted. the Board reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who is found to be tampering or attempting to tamper with the entry process or the operation of the Challenge; to be acting in violation of these Official Rules; or to be acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with the intent to disrupt or undermine the legitimate operation of this Challenge, or to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person.
    4. RELEASE AND INDEMNIFICATION: By entering the Challenge, each participant: (a) releases and agrees to hold the Board and its respective directors, officers, employees, and agents harmless from and against any and all costs, injuries, losses or damages of any kind, including, without limitation, bodily injury and property damage, or any other damage or loss, due in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, to participation in this Challenge, any Challenge related activity, or from acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any Prize, or participation in any Prize related activity; and (b) agrees to fully indemnify the Board and its respective directors, officers, employees, and agents from any and all claims on the part of any third party or parties related in any way and for any reason to the Challenge or the Prize including, without limitation, death, and personal or property damage or injury.
    5. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY:The Board assumes no responsibility or liability for incorrect, damaged, illegible, incomplete, mutilated, spoiled, destroyed, stolen, misplaced, lost, late, misdirected or incomplete Water Filer, which may be judged void, any notifications, responses, replies, or for any computer, telephone, hardware, software or technical malfunctions that may occur. The Board assumes no responsibility for any theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, Water Filter. The Board is not responsible for any injury or damage to participants in this Challenge.
    6. PUBLICITY RELEASE: By entering this Challenge, each participant who submits an Entry Submission, hereby agrees and grants to the Board, without further compensation, the unrestricted rights, but not the obligation, to use the entirety of the Water Filter, as set out in these official rules and otherwise, and to use his/her name, picture, portrait, likeness, voice, along with his/her address (City and State) and any statements made by or attributed to such Eligible Entrants, or other individuals associated with an Entry Submission, in any and all media, now known or hereafter devised, without notice, review or approval, in perpetuity and throughout the universe, and for educational, advertising and promotional purposes in connection with the Challenge, and any other promotions and programs, whatsoever, without further notice or compensation and hereby releases the Board from any liability with respect thereto.
