Users unaffiliated with the University may, under certain circumstances, be permitted to check out materials. Employees of the VA Medical Center may receive borrower’s permits. Hardin Library Loan Periods
|Books *||Hardin Library Journals have a limited loan period. They can be checked out anytime during the day and are due back before closing the following day. Journals may be renewed online or by calling 319-335-9150 up to 3 times. The “green dot” or display journals located on the current journal display shelves circulate for 2 hours only. For exceptional problems such as photographic reproduction, etc., please inquire of the staff at the Information Desk.|

**Faculty/Professional and Scientific Staff loan / Graduate, Honors, and Professional Students
This is an extended loan with a due date in June, but subject to recall anytime after the original two weeks of the loan or immediately if needed for course reserve.
Faculty and Professional/Scientific staff loans (and long term loans due June 1) may be renewed online or in person.
Graduate and Professional students (long term loans due in June) may be renewed online or in person.
2 week and 4 week book loans may be renewed online or by phone at 319-335-9150.
Journals may be renewed online or by phone at 319-335-9150.
Billed materials must be returned. You may check them out again immediately if there are no recalls on the items.
Recalled materials may not be renewed.
Reserve materials may not be renewed.
Users may recall library materials for their own use.
All library materials may be recalled after a 2- week loan period. Materials needed for Reserve may be recalled at any time.
Email notices are sent to the borrower’s address. A 5-day period is allowed for the return of the book without penalty. Borrowers who are away from their offices (vacation, leaves, etc.) will be held responsible for the return of recalled books; library materials should be readily available for office personnel to return upon recall or a current address where the borrower may be contacted should be given.
Overdue books (materials circulating for 2 weeks or longer)–Fines do not accrue on a daily basis.
Recalled books–$4.00 per day to a maximum of $40.00
Overdue journals–$ .50 per day to a maximum of $15.00
Interlibrary Loan Fines–A $40.00 non-refundable fine and $100 replacement cost fee (refundable upon return of item)
Reserve Materials–$2.40 per hour/ .04 minute to a maximum of $40.00
Laptops–$1 per hour to a maximum of $115. After 5 days you are billed an additional $1030 laptop replacement fine by ITS.
Simulators–Fines do not accrue on a daily basis. Items recalled for another user will be fined $4.00 per day to a maximum of $40.00. If an item is not returned by the due date you may be billed the entire replacement cost of the item.
The fine charges will appear on your University bill and are payable only to the University of Iowa Business Office.
A faculty member may give authorization to have materials charged out in his/her name. Signed authorization forms are kept at the library and a library card is issued to the authorized borrower.
Request Material for Delivery to Another University of Iowa Library or Delivery to your Campus or VA Office
Library users may request that materials owned by one University of Iowa Library be sent to and held for pickup at another University of Iowa Library. Library users may request items owned by Hardin library to be held at Hardin Library for pickup the next business day. Users with campus or VA office addresses may also request delivery to their office. To request a materials not available from our libraries, use Interlibrary Loan or UBorrow.
UI faculty, staff, and students living more than 30 miles away from Iowa City are eligible for book delivery. Items will be mailed to your address upon request through UPS. You are responsible for mailing books back to the library at your own expense. Materials that circulate for 7 days or less or that are currently checked out cannot be shipped.
In order to request items for delivery, locate an item in the library catalog and select the request link. Log-in with your HawkID and password and choose “Delivery for Remote Users” as your pickup location. Enter your complete shipping address and hit submit.

Regular loans can be returned multiple ways:
- Return books in person to the Hardin Library, or any other University Library.
- Return books by sending them in a Campus Mail envelope. Address the envelope: Hardin Library Returns, HLHS, HLHS.
- Return books by mail. Address the package: Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, Access Services Dept., 600 Newton Road, Iowa City, IA 52242-1098.
