The National History Day (NHD) workshops offered by the University of Iowa Libraries allow school groups to visit the Libraries and do research for their NHD projects. They will have the opportunity to utilize the Libraries’ research databases, explore the collections (including Reference, Maps, Government Publications, etc.,) visit Special Collections & University Archives, and the Iowa Women’s Archives. **This does not include visits to the State Historical Society of Iowa in Iowa City and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library in West Branch. These visits must be coordinated separately with each institution.

Students can apply for a borrower’s permit so they may check out materials of the University of Iowa Libraries. Application information is available on the National History Day Workshop page.

  • (Requests are granted on a first-come, first serve basis.)
  • Librarians from the University of Iowa Libraries are available to come to your school to introduce your students to National History Day research. Web-based sessions are also an option. These visits can be for school groups unable to attend a NHD workshop at the University of Iowa as well as school groups who are interested in having a librarian help prepare students for attending a workshop.

  • Site visits are only available to schools within a 75 mile radius of Iowa City, IA.

  • *These are the only dates that will be offered for the workshops. Workshops are limited to 50 students.
