Opening Spring 2027

Public Notice is an exhibition which explores the University of Iowa Libraries’ rich collection of United States government posters, as well as other forms of government-sponsored public art. These flyers, posters, pamphlets, murals, and more were designed to relay important information and educate the public. They are also eye-catching works of art and capsules of the times in which they were made.

Curated by Ellen Wrede and Patricia Gimenez, this exhibition shows materials from nearly 100 years of U.S. history and culture in the form of public notices. It examines how government art has compelled the public to pay attention and take action over the decades. What is the government saying? What do these things say about us as a society, community, and nation? Visit to decide for yourself.
