“Young Person” programming is one way orchestras build future audiences. Over the course of his career, James Dixon appeared in concert with Bob Keeshan (a.k.a. Captain Kangaroo), Bob McGrath (of Sesame Street), Shari Lewis (and Lamb Chop), and other children’s performers. These events, as well as pops concerts and annual holiday celebrations, make for concerts that are accessible for family members of all ages.
Below is an article from the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune highlighting Dixon’s work with Captain Kangaroo, a popular children’s performer with a show that originally aired from 1955–1984.
